The term Kanjivaram Saree is also known as Kanjeevaram Sarees, Kanchi Cotton Sarees, and Kanchipuram Silk Sarees. As the name sounds, it came from a town in Tamil Nadu called Kanchipuram where the Saree was originally originated. Kanjivaram saree has a close connection with Saint Markanda, the God of Weaver. The Chola King Krishna Deva Raya who ruled the Kanchipuram city from the year 985 to 1015 took the initiative of trading silk sarees. The real weaving experts the Devangas and the Saligars visited the city Kanchipuram at that time to increase the silk trading. Since then, saree become popular throughout the Chola dynasty.

Kanjivaram saris are woven from mulberry silk thread. To weave a Kanjivaram saree three shuttles are used. The border colour and design are usually quite different from the body. In Kanjivaram Silk Sari, body and border are woven separately and then interlocked together. Kanchipuram sarees vary widely in cost depending upon the intricacy of work, colours, pattern, material used like zari (gold, silver and copper thread) etc. Plain Kanjivaram Saree have Golden border giving a rich look.
